One month later, Rowan knew why his nerves never quite settled. Why his stomach twisted anytime he tried to drink anything stronger than water. Why, when he closed his eyes at night, he could remember the touch of Gus’s fingers on his skin, the way he smelled as Rowan breathed in his hair.
Why he felt dizzy when he sat up too quickly.
Why his expected heat never actually came.
“She asked me to make the topper for the cake,” said Amelia, scowling at the block of wood sitting on the kitchen table. Rowan sat across from her, tapping his fork against the slice of cake in front of him. The cake was mostly crumbles at this point and he hadn’t been able to take a single bite.
Then again, Amelia hadn’t been able to carve into the block of wood either, despite the array of knives on the table.
“Are you going to do it?” asked Rowan dully.
“Not with any of these blocks of wood,” grumbled Amelia. “This one’s a kitchen witch. Can’t exactly go putting that on a cake, can I?”
“No,” echoed Rowan.
“She keeps asking about it,” continued Amelia. “Every couple of days. Oh, Amelia, we picked out the flowers, we’re going to have roses and chrysanthemums, can you make the topper to match? Oh, Amelia, you should see my dress, it’s so lovely, all lace overlay, I can send you a sample to include the pattern in the topper. Oh, Amelia, what do you think of using paint instead of stain, we’re going with yellow and blue for colors, you can add those accents into the topper?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“You’re not listening to me.”
“I’m listening. Blue and yellow.”
“And elephants.”
“And elephants.”
Amelia groaned in frustration. “You’re the damn elephant. What is wrong with you today, Rowan?”
Rowan didn’t answer; he just kept tapping the cake with the tines of his fork.
“Look,” said Amelia, growing testy. “I know what you’re doing. The whole last month, you’ve shut yourself away up here, you’re not going into town. Which I can understand – it’s not like anyone’s talking about anything else other than the upcoming wedding. I wish I could stay away from town too. But what’s really weird is that you’ve barely seen Celia at all.”
“I know,” whispered Rowan.
“Trust me, she’s so wedding crazy I can understand it, I wish I could get her to shut up about it for two minutes – but half the reason she’s bothering me is because she can’t get in touch with you. You could at least spare me a thought and give her the time of day so I get a break. It’s not easy for me, either, you know.”
Rowan sighed. “I know. I’m sorry. I know you hate anything to do with romance.”
“Are you going to eat the cake, or just destroy it?” asked Amelia, pointing at the cake that Rowan has systematically destroyed.
“I’m pregnant,” Rowan blurted out.
Tap tap tap.
“Oh,” said Amelia, shocked and faint.
The moment passed. “So… that’s a no on the cake?”
Rowan shoved the plate over to her.
“Well, that explains a lot,” said Amelia, not touching the cake.
